Ladies Match Reports
Sunday 09th October 2011: Bletchley Ladies 5 – 39 Rushden & Higham Ladies
This was the first match of the season for both Bletchley Ladies and their opponents. Since last season, Bletchley Ladies have seen a lot of changes, and the team today included a lot of players who were playing their first competitive game of rugby, having only taken up rugby this summer.
As both are development teams the game was played in quarters.
From the start, Rushden show their greater experience, scoring a converted try between the posts after 10 minutes. Just 3 minutes later they added to their score with a try by the corner flag, which went unconverted. At the end of the first quarter, Rushden led 12 - nil.
Two minutes into the 2nd quarter, Rushden again made a break. Bletchley defended well, gaining some possession, but Rushden regained the ball, resulting in another try. The remainder of the quarter saw possession alternating between the two teams, but no further score.
In the 3rd and 4th quarters the Bletchley Ladies settled better into the game, making some strong tackles and beginning to move the ball more successfully. Rushden gained four more tries, one of which was converted, bringing the score to 0 - 39 to Rushden. Finally, in the closing minutes of the game, the Bletchley Ladies piled on the pressure, gained possession, off-loaded to Harriet Smyth, no 6, who took the ball over the line. The final score was 5 – 39 to Rushden and Higham Ladies.
Despite the score line, it was evident that the new Bletchley Ladies are beginning to gel as a team and to apply moves that have been worked on in training. Keep it up.
